It is frequently true that one cannot be king in his/her own land.
These five Brazilian artists have or had a certain success in their homeland, but today they are widely known internationally – and in most cases, are unknown or forgotten in Brazil. When I lived in Paris, 15 years ago, I remember everybody would ask me if I knew Nazaré Pereira, a big star in those lands. Not a clue.
What about Nelson Ned, the schmaltzy little man who was big in Brazil in the seventies, was totally forgotten by the Brazilian crowds, and became the king of Mexican hearts? He sang in the Carnegie Hall and was the first latin artist to sell over one million records in the US, in the mid-seventies.
Also, Astrud Gilberto and Sérgio Mendes, extremely popular names around the globe, are definitely ignored by the average Brazilian.
Do you remember other examples?

Simone Moreno started out as a Bahian singing sensation, but is now popular in Sweden.
