A 1930 beauty contest in Rio
This is a really fun collage of photos of the Brazilian and foreign girls that participated in an international beauty pageant in Rio in 1930. Interesting how the beauty ideal changed since (more about this discussion in a post, Unconventional Brazilian Beauty).
Brazilian Yolanda Pereira won the contest – was it fair, you will be the judge. She was saluted by a radio narrator that praised her light dark skin, which, he claims, is essential to someone representing the country (“seu moreninho mate é a cor que deve ter toda patrícia para ser bem brasileira“).
