Thanks for posting this. I am facing a similar situation. My partner is here on a visitors/student visa and will have to return to Brazil. Would an immigration lawyer be of help, especially if we did a civil union in my home state and a marriage in Brazil?

Doug - it was not hard at all to document our relationship. We just had to show that we had been partners for five years (and I believe now the bar has been lowered.) And you can also go to a notary here and simple declare your relationship and they will certify that it is so -- no problem.

We brought rent documents, bankng documents, and our marriage certificate.

It was also necessary that we could assert that Luiz could support me in Brazil until I got up and running. I had to also prove that I had health insurance.

It was very simple, overall. We got expert assistance from the folks at Mundivisas http://www.mundivisas.com.br/ They were great!

In less than a year I was set with a permanent resident visa and a work permit.

Then it was a challenge to actually make a living wage!

Dear Doug:

My American husband and I got tired of the U.S. discriminatory laws against us. Therefore, we decided to move to Brazil. Specially, after prop. 8.

It is really easy to get the permanent residency visa. It took around 5-6 months, and in 4 years my husband can apply for citizenship. The culture is easy-going, very relaxed here in Bahia, but towards Souht Brazil, it changes a lot. Brazil is booming, and soon we will have the olimpics.

If you would like some more info, you can check www.vistobrasil.com.br ou google Heitor Barbi, he is an excellent gay immigration lawyer.

Keep the hard work in out4immigration.

Thanks,

Leo
